Use semantic search

Semantic search is an AI-enhanced search technology that provides more robust results than traditional search. Semantic search supports conversational queries or prompts, such as How do I add shadows to 3D features? or How do I add tools to the Quick Access Toolbar? and returns results that best meet the perceived intent of the search.

Semantic search is not an interactive AI application or chat interface and does not use generative AI technology. It does not provide instructions or explanations that can be used to complete workflows.

Semantic search is available for many user interface components that support traditional search if you install the Semantic Search AI model when you install ArcGIS Pro. These components include the following:

If you do not install the Semantic Search AI model when you install ArcGIS Pro, you can install it later by modifying the setup.

When the Semantic Search AI model is installed, semantic search works throughout ArcGIS Pro. You cannot turn it on for some parts of the application and turn it off for others.

An AI icon appears in search boxes that support semantic search. If the model is installed, the icon is enabled. If the model is not installed, the icon is dimmed. If the icon does not appear in a search box, semantic search is not supported. You can confirm whether semantic search is enabled by hovering over the icon and reading the ScreenTip.

The ScreenTip in the Command Search box indicates that semantic search is enabled.

Semantic search supports search phrases in the language of the installed and activated ArcGIS Pro language pack. When using a language pack, you can enter both non-English and English search phrases. The quality of results may not be the same in all languages.

Note:

Semantic search requires a processor supporting the AVX2 instruction set. If this hardware requirement is not met, semantic search is disabled even if the Semantic Search AI model is installed.
